How to update to Joomla 6?




Updating your Joomla website to version 6 is a straightforward process when done correctly. In this tutorial, you’ll learn how to prepare your site and perform a smooth update to Joomla 6 without downtime or errors.




Before updating to Joomla 6


  1. Ensure your current server environment meets the minimum requirements for Joomla 6: PHP 8.3.0, MySQL 8.0.13, or MariaDB 10.6.
  2. Make sure all your installed extensions support Joomla 6.
  3. Update Joomla on your site to the latest Joomla 5.x.
  • Before you start upgrading your site to Joomla 6, make a backup of your site

Updating to Joomla 6


  1. Navigate to the Joomla dashboard.
  2. Enable Update to Joomla 6. Go to Update ➝ Options ➝ Update Channel ➝ Joomla Next ➝ click the Save & Close button.
  3. Disable the "Behaviour - Backward Compatibility" plugin if enabled. Click on the button Disable Plugin.
  4. Navigate to the Joomla dashboard ➝ Update ➝ Start Update. Wait until the updating process is completed.
