Single Event - Notifications

Hi,
We need a solution that works like this: a single event that you can sign up for, pay for, etc. Booking doesn't work because you have to block other dates, etc. :( Orders would work, but there's no notification before the upcoming event—which is an important element. Is there any other way to accomplish this?
In summary:
We have an event for a specific day, the customer signs up, pays, receives a notification that they've signed up, and then receives a reminder before the event, say, two days before?
Is there a combination that will handle this?
