update button not working in forms

In the back end gridbox forms is saying that there is an update available, but when I click the button, nothing happens. Tried clearig cache and different browsers and nohing seems to work. If I go to extensions manager and try to update from there I get an error message saying Failed to extract file: option_com_licenseactivations_task_baforms.update

Also, I noticed from extensions manager that gallery also needs to be updated, but gallery seems to be missing entirely from the components area. If I try to update gallery from the extensions manager I get the error Failed to extract file: login

This may have happened after an update. I'm not sure since the site is loading fine and everything looks good on the front end.
